Center for Translational Cancer Research: IISER Pune and Prashanti Cancer Care Mission

Dr. Madhura Kulkarni her Ph.D. in Molecular Genetics from University of Maryland, College Park, USA. During her post-doctoral work at MGH-Harvard Medical School, USA and Cancer Science Institute, Singapore; she has gained extensive experience in cancer biology and translational research specifically pertaining to breast cancer. Her work has been published in many high impact international journals. Dr Kulkarni has received prestigious ‘re-entry’ Ramalingaswami fellowship from Department of Biotechnology, India to return to Indian and to set-up a laboratory.

Breast cancer is one of the highest lifetime risks and the most common cause of cancer death amongst women worldwide. In India, 27% of all the cancer deaths happen due to breast cancer and 50% of these cases are below age 50 with majority below 37, unlike that of western countries. Dr Kulkarni’s research focuses on investigating novel molecular signalling pathways that lead to aggressive breast cancer, specifically in Indian Subcontinent, which may lead to developing India specific novel diagnostic regimes as well as novel targets.
