Dr. Nitin S. Baliga is Professor at ISB, where he was a founding member and currently serves as Director and SVP. He is engaged in solving complex problems in global health, personalized medicine, and the environment. His team develops predictive models of cellular and molecular networks within pathogens, cancer cells, and environmental microbes to enable biotechnologies to overcome drug resistance, find new drugs, and predicted consequence of climate change.

Baliga has a BS in Microbiology (1992) from Ruia College (Mumbai University),a MS in Biotechnology from Goa University, a PhD in Microbiology fromUMass Amherst,and has done postdoctoral training in Systems Biology with Dr. Leroy Hood. He holds active appointments at the University of Washington and Berkeley Labs.

Baliga has published more than 100 peer-reviewed articles in top international journals including Cell, Science and Nature, grossing more than 20,000 citations. He has editorial roles on several international journals including BMC Systems Biology, BMC Bioinformatics, EnvironmentalMicrobiology, Nature Scientific Data, and he serves on the board of ClimateSolutions. He was invited to the Google SciFoo camp and has been widely profiled in magazines and journals including The Scientist, Genome Web,Wired Magazine, Genetic Engineering News, ArsTechnica, Xconomy, and Nature Methods.

Baliga’s research has been supported by NASA, DOE, DOD, NIH, NSF, and Bill& Melinda Gates Foundation. Baliga has also made significant contributions to science education and outreach through the Systems Education Experiences program he founded over 15 years ago, for which he has won the Alvin J.
